Therapeutic Riding Instructor Education Course

High Hopes’ Certified Instructor Training and Education Course incorporates lectures and experience in teaching therapeutic riding and follows the PATH Intl. Approved Training Curriculum. Our course faculty includes more than 10 experienced teachers with backgrounds in physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, master and advanced level instructing, expressive therapies, recreational therapy, nonprofit management, fundraising and development. The diversity of our program participants and therapy horses, combined with our skilled volunteers, provides a learning environment where student-instructor trainees can advance their knowledge and skills, learning how to plan and implement safe, effective therapeutic riding lessons. Prior riding instruction and volunteer experience in a therapeutic riding program is strongly encouraged.

PATH Intl. Approved Training Curriculum

Instructor Training Certification

High Hopes’ Certified Instructor in Training Education Course will provide you with the tools and education necessary as you work towards your PATH Intl. Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor (CTRI) Application. If you undertake your Instructor in Training Education at High Hopes, you will also be able to apply to undertake the 25 hours of practicum/mentored teaching component at our internationally-recognized training facility in Old Lyme, CT.

Alternatively, you may choose a multi-step, self-directed educational process that culminates a variety of different educational offerings.  To support this process, you may decide to take one or more of High Hopes’ workshops, which provide the knowledge and skills for focused areas of the PATH Intl. Job Task Analysis.

Pre-requisite Criteria for Instructor in Training Program

  • Must be at least 21 years of age (applicants under the age of 21 will be considered on an individual basis)
  • Proof of attendance at PATH Intl. Approved Training Curriculum (ATC) Course or proof of attendance at the High Hopes Instructor Workshops within the past two years
  • Current Resume
  • A letter of intent, addressing reasons for applying to course and intentions upon graduation
  • Explanation provided of:
    • Previous volunteer experience at a therapeutic riding program
    • Previous experience with disabilities
    • Method of teaching of non-therapy riding preferred
  • Personal letter of reference (no more than two years old)
  • Professional letter of reference (no more than two years old)
  • Proof of previous experience with disabilities
  • Copies of current CPR and First Aid Cards
  • Equine Management and Handling Skills Checklist or adequate proof of basic stable management and horse knowledge
  • Submission of a teaching video demonstrating the published pattern is required as part of the application process. Teaching skills at the strong intermediate level must be demonstrated for acceptance into the course. Skills must demonstrate ability to teach a student at the walk, trot, canter, knowledge of correct leads and diagonals, security of seat, appropriate contact and communication with the horse, understanding of correct bend and performance of ring figures throughout the pattern.
  • Proof of previous volunteer experience of at least one year at a therapeutic riding program strongly encouraged.
  • Experience teaching non-therapy riding strongly encouraged.
