Prospective Volunteers Step 1

Weekly Volunteer Roles Include:

Office Volunteer/Front Desk

Answer phones, take messages, greet participants and visitors, data entry, envelope stuffing, other projects – such as seasonal decorations – occasionally available.

  • No experience required.

Sidewalker

A sidewalker is responsible for the well-being of the participant on horseback.  You walk alongside the horse during the riding lesson, help with questions, encouragement, and other support that assists the rider in working toward their goals.

  • Must be able to walk for 1 hour with intermittent jogging.
  • Experience working with individuals with diagnoses helpful, but not required.

Horse Leader

A horse leader is responsible for the care and well-being of the horse during the lesson.

  • Must be able to walk for 1 hour with intermittent jogging.
  • Must have recent experience leading, caring for, lessoning on, owning or leasing horses.
  • Experience grooming and tacking helpful, but not required.

Feeder

Assist in preparing for and feeding our herd.  Feeding occurs rain or shine 365 days a year.

  • Must be able to lift approximately 50 lb. bales of hay.
  • Must be available 8-10 AM, one morning a week, year round.

Barn Volunteer

Clean stalls, sweep, assist in tack set up or clean up, wash buckets, help with other barn chores.

  • No experience required.

Carriage Driving Header

Assist in driving lessons heading the carriage horse before and after the lesson.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have ample horse experience, including one year of horse leader training at High Hopes.
  • Carriage driving experience not required, but strongly preferred.

Able Bodied Whip (ABW)

Drive carriages during carriage driving sessions.

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have at least 50 hours of varied driving experience, including assisting with carriage driving at High Hopes.

Unmounted Equine Learning Program (ELP) Coach

ELP coach provides hands on, unmounted equine education to participants.

  • Must have ample horse experience and/or experience with individuals with diagnoses.

Facility Volunteer

Help with various maintenance and equipment around the property.

Development Volunteer
Assist development staff with fundraising, grant writing, etc.

All volunteers are trained and mentored by High Hopes Staff.

Intermittent or One-Time Volunteer Roles Include:

  • Assistance with yearly special events such as Gala, Horse Show Days or Holiday Market.
  • Outreach – become a High Hopes ambassador to your community.

With almost 50 years of service to our participants and the community, High Hopes continues to strive to provide relevant and fulfilling experiences to our volunteers as well.
