50th Anniversary

Chris Coyle

Chris Coyle was a man of many talents, many good friends, and much kindness. A beloved High Hopes volunteer for over 20 years, Chris generously shared his skills in carpentry, electronics, music, design, engineering and construction wherever and whenever they were needed.

Chris first came to High Hopes in early 2000 because his wife, Patti, had begun working in many aspects of program here.  He began as a sidewalker in physical therapist Carolyn Jagielski’s class on Wednesdays.  Wednesday soon became Chris’s High Hopes day as his involvement as a volunteer grew exponentially. As a member of the Building and Grounds Committee, Chris understood the many needs of the facility and grounds, and developed plans to implement solutions. Chris’s previous experience as a firefighter helped him contribute to safety and risk management standards, and fire emergency training for staff. With his extensive knowledge of electronics, Chris could be counted on to ensure the integrity of group communications during events. Chris also designed and built the beautiful cabinet in the lounge where volunteer badges are housed, and helped install the special weathervane on the gazebo.

Chris lent his talents to many projects and special events, but perhaps his favorite was the Sensory Trail.  The Sensory Trail is a very special feature at High Hopes. Its paths go through a quiet section of woods, with things to hear, to touch, to do, to ride through and to experience. Chris designed, and built, with the help of volunteers and local Eagle Scouts, this trail including an almost life-sized railroad crossing with a handle riders pull down to raise and lower the gate, and music stations along the paths with PVC pipes he tuned to actual musical notes.

Chris supported High Hopes in many, many ways and in 2013 received the PATH Region I Volunteer of the Year Award. He served as a Trustee on the Board, co-chaired the Hoedown, and helped at every other event.  He was a champion of the staff, and a true ambassador of equine assisted services. A natural leader with a contagious smile, Chris had a way of helping even the shiest person feel more comfortable. He loved interacting with people – volunteers, staff and participants alike. Chris was positive, supportive, kind and caring, an extraordinary volunteer and member of the High Hopes community who gave freely of his talents, skills and himself to all.
